Program Design
Our BA program courses are divided into five categories: Foundation, Applied Linguistics, Cultural & Literary Studies, English for Specific Purposes & Integrated Application, and Second Foreign Language.
Foundation Courses
We have a strong emphasis on the training of the four foundation English language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing. Starting from the freshman year and going all the way to the senior year, our foundation courses form a grid that covers both the width and the depth of foundational English skill training. Courses build on one another, and students must pass lower-level courses before advancing to higher-level courses.
Applied Linguistics Courses
The main focus of the applied linguistics courses is to acquaint students with the syntax, phonetics, and pragamatics in English; language's influence on society; and the theory and applications of language acquisition, laying a solid foundation for employment and further studies in linguistics. Students improve their logic and build a solid work ethic. They become prepared for careers in teaching, education administration, and translation.
Cultural & Literary Studies Courses
Cultural & literary studies courses introduce students to the world of cultural and literary studies, exploring the entire range of Western literature and Anglo-American history and culture. Through the studies of classic and contemporary literature, students will gain the understanding and appreciation of the complexity of literature and language and the capability for language analysis. Students gain an extensive and nuanced vocabulary and become proficient in cultural criticism, logic, communication, international affairs, and international etiquette.
English for Specific Purposes & Integrated Application Courses
These interdisciplinary courses focus on real-world, in-depth, diverse applications of the skills learned. The courses integrate English with other professional fields, including business, technology, and media productions, and they cultivate professionals with multi-faceted skills. Students gain skills in business communication, presentations, using technology, international affairs, and international etiquette.
Second Foreign Language Courses
We emphasize second language training and hire language-specific instructors to meet the demand for such courses. To maximize the learning effectiveness, the training of a second foreign language starts in the sophomore year, and students must complete eight credits of second foreign language courses. Through these courses, students not only learn to communicate in an additional language, they increase their understanding of global affairs, improve their cross-cultural communication, and become adept cultural critics with a knowledge of international affairs.
