Shawn Chang

I received my Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I currently work as an Associate Professor in the Department of English at National Taipei University of Technology. I am an experimental phonetician focusing on phonetic and sociophonetic variation in speech production and perception as well as second language speech learning and training. Over the past few years, my research has concentrated on the articulation, acoustics, and perception of Mandarin coronal consonants (alveolars, retroflexes, and palatals).

In my recent research project (funded by Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology), I used ultrasound to examine the inventory of articulatory configurations (i.e., various tongue shapes and other secondary articulatory gestures, such as lip rounding) in Mandarin retroflex consonants and specify their acoustic realizations.
