  • B.A. English, Class of 2021

Han-tang Leo Li (李漢堂) received both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the Department of English at Taipei Tech. With a passion for phonetics and human beatboxing, Leo works as an ESL teacher and continues to develop innovative, music-oriented teaching methodologies.

During his academic years, Leo explored various approaches to language teaching. He was a manager of English Corner (now English Producers), where he helped facilitate the development of English proficiency among peers and students. Towards the end of both his undergraduate and graduate studies at Taipei Tech, he served as an assistant for APLX 2021 (International Conference on Applied Linguistics) and presented his research at APLX 2023 (International Joint Conference of APLX, ETRA40, and TESPA 2023).

His graduate thesis, titled Teaching L2 Speech Rhythm via Human Beatboxing, broke new ground by exploring the use of beatboxing in teaching L2 speech rhythm. Under the advisement of Yung-hsiang Shawn Chang (張詠翔), a full-time professor in the department, Leo was able to further integrate his passion for beatboxing into his work in L2 phonetic teaching.

Currently, Leo is an ESL teacher in the Applied Foreign Language Department at Er Xin High School in Keelung. In addition, he remains dedicated to exploring the sounds of speech as a beatbox performer.

“Language is my belief, and beatbox is my composition.”
