Sheng-yen Yu received his Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, now called Stony Brook University. His primary areas of specialization are Renaissance drama, world literatures in English, and postcolonial theory and literature. He teaches courses in English, American and world literatures and cultures. His dissertation was entitled “British Imperialism and the Rhetoric of Cross-Cultural Representations in Kim, Hindupore, The Prince of Destiny and A Passage to India.” His articles on Shakespeare, Chinua Achebe, J. M. Coetzee, and Henry James appeared respectively in Fu Jen Studies, Journal of Commonwealth and Postcolonial Studies (now called the Journal of Global Postcolonial Studies), Postcolonial Green: Environmental Politics and World Narratives, and Origins of English Literary Modernism, 1870-1914. He has co-edited with Yu-cheng Lee a special journal issue on literature and silence, titled The Ineffable and the Unsaid (published in NTU Studies in Language and Literature, which has changed to Ex-Position). His more recent research interests are in the works by authors such as J. M. Coetzee, Michael Ondaatje, Haruki Murakami, and Kazuo Ishiguro. He is working on a book project titled Rethinking Postcoloniality: History, Culture, and Politics in Contemporary Postcolonial Novels in English.
